Community Boat House is a pro-bono proposal for a multi-space educational and office facility located along the Colorado River in the Montopolis neighborhood of Austin, Texas. The project is focused on creating a flexible, community-oriented environment that supports learning, collaboration, and daily use while responding directly to its natural context.
The design is organized around a series of interconnected program elements that allow for both shared and independent use. Educational spaces, offices, and support areas are arranged to maintain clarity in circulation while enabling overlap between users and activities. This approach supports a range of functions without compromising operational efficiency.
Connection to the site is a primary driver. The building is positioned to engage the riverfront and surrounding landscape, extending activity outward and reinforcing a relationship between indoor and outdoor environments. Circulation paths and gathering areas are aligned to maximize access to natural light, views, and open space.
The project emphasizes accessibility and inclusiveness, creating a space that is approachable and adaptable for a broad user base. Shared zones are distributed throughout the plan to encourage interaction, while more focused areas support individual work and smaller group use.
Material and form are used to establish a cohesive identity grounded in simplicity and restraint. The building expression is clean and intentional, allowing the surrounding landscape to remain a central component of the experience.
CBH reflects a community-driven approach to design—balancing flexibility, clarity, and site integration to create a space that supports both everyday use and long-term engagement.
