STATUS:
Completed 2021

LOCATION:
Philadelphia, PA

SCOPE:
Renovation

This project reimagines a traditional Philadelphia row home through a complete interior transformation—balancing the character of an existing urban structure with the demands of modern living. At approximately 1,000 square feet, the design focuses on maximizing efficiency, clarity, and comfort within a compact footprint.

The scope involved a full gut renovation of both the first and second floors, allowing the layout to be reconsidered from the ground up. The reorganization prioritizes flow and usability, replacing compartmentalized rooms with a more open and intuitive plan. Living, kitchen, and dining functions are now more seamlessly connected, creating a space that feels larger, brighter, and more adaptable to daily life.

Material selection plays a key role in establishing a cohesive identity. Warm wood tones, clean white surfaces, and subtle textural contrasts create a modern aesthetic while maintaining a sense of warmth appropriate to the scale of the home. In the kitchen, refined detailing—such as the copper hood, deep green tile, and streamlined cabinetry—introduces depth and character without overwhelming the space.

A second restroom was introduced to improve functionality and support contemporary living standards. The bathroom design emphasizes durability and simplicity, pairing rich wood textures with dark fixtures and clean-lined elements to create a grounded, modern environment.

Beyond the interior, the project enhances the connection to the city. Improved access to the rooftop deck transforms it into a usable extension of the home, offering valuable outdoor space and views of the Philadelphia skyline.

This renovation reflects a focused approach to small-scale urban design—where strategic planning, material clarity, and thoughtful detailing work together to unlock the full potential of an existing row home.
